In a perfect world, we’d all eat only whole foods that were naturally gluten-free! Everything would be made from scratch and we’d never utilize processed ingredients. But we live in a busy world and thankfully there are plenty of healthy gluten-free products to help us find a little balance while getting meals on the table.
1. Soy Sauce / Tamari
We make a lot of Asian inspired meals in our home, and without tamari it would be difficult. Tamari is the gluten-free version of soy sauce with a slightly milder flavor.
2. Buns and Bread
I try to keep my consumption of gluten-free baked goods to a minimum, but sometimes you want a great burger on a bun or a sandwich or toast!
My favorite brand that I’ve found to be tasty and not to dry or crumbly is Canyon Bakehouse. I like their burger and hot dog buns as well as their breads.
I generally find this at Target or Sprouts.
3. Pasta
Since my gluten-free journey began, I’ve discovered my love for chickpea pasta! I’ve loved every variety of pasta from Banza that I’ve tried, and I especially love their chickpea rice which I often use in place of orzo pasta.
I find this is available at most grocery stores.
4. Thickener
Instead of flour (or even cornstarch) I found that I prefer to use tapioca flour (or occasionally tapioca pearls) to thicken sauces, etc. It has a very smooth texture and thickens quickly, so you may use less than you would with flour or cornstarch.
5. Crackers
For me, delicious crackers are a must! For dipping or snacking, I like a good crispy cracker to enjoy. My favorite is Simple Mills Almond Crackers, which you can also buy in large packages at Costco for a great price!
6. Other Products
While I’m still on this journey, I’m sure I’ll find other favorite products along the way, and I’ll be sure to update this list. If you have any favorites that you would recommend, I’d love for you to share them with me!
As always, read labels and contact the company for the product if you have any concerns. For me personally, I don’t need to be concerned as much about cross-contamination, but many people do, so know for sure and always use your best judgement when buying products for use in your own gluten-free kitchen!
